Saint Ethelbert Probus Club
Hereford
Our club has approximately 40 retired male members and was founded in 1978. We meet each Tuesday morning at the Kindle Centre (http://www.kindlecentre.org.uk) which is attached to the ASDA store in Hereford. Our meetings start at 10.15 - members arrive earlier for tea or coffee and a chat - and finish at about 11.30. Most weeks we have a speaker - a guest speaker or one of our members. As well as our weekly meetings there is a programme of social events and visits.

If you would like to enquire about joining us, or if you are a PROBUS member visiting our area, you can contact our Secretary on 01981 550150 or email PROBUS@jeffandjan.com
Saint Ethelbert is the patron saint of Hereford whose cathedral is ‘The Cathedral Church of St. Mary The Virgin and St Ethelbert the King’. The Anglo Saxon Chronicles state that, in 794, ‘Offa, king of Mercia, commanded Aethelberht’s head to be struck off’. Ethelbert was the young king of East Anglia and his murder took place not far from Hereford. There are several versions of the story of why he came to Herefordshire and what followed - to read our version click here.

More about us
Our social programme, in which our better halves are invited to join us, currently includes 3 lunches per year, a skittles evening and an evening barbecue. On St. Ethelbert's day in May we are fortunate to be able to meet at the home of the Dean of Hereford Cathedral, an honorary member of our club, for coffee, and we then gather around the St. Ethelbert shrine in the cathedral for a short celebration service. One of our meetings near to Christmas gives us the opportunity to socialise with mince pies.

We enjoy occasional outings - past visits have included the Black Country Living Museum, Blenheim Palace, St. Fagans National History Museum and, in 2011, Berrington Hall and Hereford Cathedral We normally also have an annual coach holiday - in recent years to Harrogate and Liverpool, and, in 2011, the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

There is an annual subscription of £100 which pays for our meeting room, our speakers and other outgoings. Our members also purchase a PROBUS lapel badge and tie to wear at our meetings. We ask for a commitment to attend at least 17 meetings per year.

Our committee meets 4 times a year reporting back to the club at the following weekly meeting, and we have our AGM in March.
